The internet is debating what is an appropriate meat to put on the BBQ – and we're not just talking about what sorta burger they might like.

How would you feel about an alligator on your barbie this summer? It might sound odd, but one woman on Twitter has sparked an interesting debate...

User Taylor Poindexter (who goes by @engineering_bae on the platform) posted a picture of a huge alligator cooking on the BBQ, with the caption: "Life of a country woman.

"Cousins are about to throw this bad boy on the grill," she added.

Naturally, different cultures are accustomed to different meats, but the reaction to Washington D.C. resident Taylor's pic showed that not everyone was comfortable with the idea of eating alligator.

"I know it tastes like chicken but damn, this is why I can't eat food that stares back at me before I eat it," said one person in the comments.

While another wrote: "I feel like certain s**t don’t need to be ate."

"WHATTTTT," someone else chimed in.

There was angrier reaction too, but the Twitter user had a response to any criticism that came her way.

Speaking to naysayers, she said her family had caught the gator themselves, skinned it, seasoned it and cooked it, arguing this was better than other processed meats.

"A few folks are saying this is barbaric or cruel, but when I scroll through their accounts, they eat meat.

"Even if you don't witness it up close and personal, that chicken and cow yall eat also has to be processed. This is no different," Taylor said.

"I genuinely think most people are so far removed from the process they forget they’re eating an actual animal," someone else chimed in.

As another agreed: "That gator lived a better life and was ended more humanely than most US farmed cows, but go off I guess".

"It honestly just reminds me of someone catching a wild pig and cooking it LOL theres like no difference," a third wrote.

Alligator might not be for anyone, but we must admit Taylor has a point.
