Morgan Spurlock, the star of documentary Super Size Me, has passed away aged 53.

The Oscar nominated film-maker died on Thursday (23rd May) after a private battle with cancer, his family have just revealed in a statement.

"It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan," his brother Craig Spurlock, said.

"Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him."

The film-maker's death comes two decades on from his iconic movie, Super Size Me, where Morgan ate nothing but McDonald's for a month, to highlight the dangers of fast food.

The experiment meant he had to order from the Golden Arches three times a day for 30 days, and said yes to a 'super-size' portion whenever he was offered it.

In the doc, it was obvious Morgan's mental health took a knock, and he also gained 24.5 pounds by the end.

The film grossed $22m (£18.7m) at the global box office, according to Variety, and much critical acclaim.

In fact, McDonald's got rid of the 'super-size' option after the documentary aired.

Other films from Morgan include 2008 documentary feature, Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, and he's also released titles such as The Greatest Movie Ever Sold and 30 Days.

Plus, Morgan notably directed the One Direction movie, One Direction: This Is Us in 2013.

Over his career, the documentary maker produced almost 70 titles, via his company Warrior Poet.

He even made a follow-up to Super Size Me, named Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!. however it was removed from the Sundance Film Festival in 2017 after Morgan admitted to sexual misconduct.

He said he was accused of rape whilst in college, was unfaithful to his all of his wives and girlfriends and settled a sexual harassment case with an assistant at his office.

The film-maker then stepped down from Warrior Poets.
